From 1861 to 1864, writer Mark Twain (real name: Samuel Clemens) lived in Virginia City, where his brother, Orion Clemens, resided. ... After brief but unsuccessful attempts at mining in Aurora and Unionville, Twain was hired by the Territorial Enterprise newspaper in Virginia City.

The Daily Territorial Enterprise Newspaper-January

 The Enterprise staff enjoyed Clemens's letters that satirized the oratory of the territory's chief justice. In the fall, he was offered twenty-five dollars a week to become the city editor of the paper, which he accepted. Also, in the Enterprise were stories of vigilante , and queries as to who  they could be?
